Is Acupuncture safe?
When applied by the right person of course it is. Whether you come to see Dr. White or not please insure that your practitioner is registered with the AHPRA / Chinese Medicine Board AND the AACMA. Make sure they have a MINIMUM of 4 years training (and preferably a few years clinical experience). Avoid physiotherapists, chiropractors, and medical practitioners who have done short courses in acupuncture or "dry needling". You wouldn't go to someone who has done a short course in surgery, pharmaceutical medicine or joint manipulation.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
Generally speaking Acupuncture does not hurt. It does, however, produce different sensations when needling. These sensations can be warmth, a muscular spasm, tightness, aching, or even a sensation of movement. Acupuncture is NOT like having an injection, the needles are finer and manipulated in a very different way. Sensation in acupuncture will naturally depend on what is being addressed.
What about herbal medicine?
Our herbal medicine is very safe. Australia naturally has some of the strictest laws in regards to what foreign plant life comes into its shores. The Therapeutic Goods Administration Act, of which we adhere to, insures that we prescribe only ethically produced and distributed herbal medicine. No endangered spices (whether pant, mineral or animal) are used at our practice.
How many Treatments will I need?
This is not easy to answer as it will depend greatly on why you are seeking Dr. White's help. Acute injuries can be addressed immediately or over a few sessions. Chronic issues often take time. A good guide for many ailments is 4 - 6 sessions then a review. Generally Dr. White can give you an idea of what will be needed for your condition after the initial consultation.
How do I know if Acupuncture is right for me?
You most likely will not until you seek the direction and help of a professional practitioner. It is worth noting that Acupuncture and Chinese medicine was the sole medical practice of one of the largest and earliest civilisation for well over 2000 years. China's exemplary record keeping meant that we have access to the methods of these 2 millennia and how every illness known to man was addressed, where it worked and where it failed. Chinese medicine has it's own specialities, theoretical frameworks, and methods developed within a very specific, time defying, scientific paradigm. If you are unsure then the best thing to do is ask...
